Cincinnati Milacron Extrusion Enhances Screw Manufacturing Capabilities

New Machining Center Installed and Running at Wear Technology

BATAVIA, OHIO – June 8, 2009… Cincinnati Milacron Extrusion Systems announced today that a new machining system has been installed at the Wear Technology operation in McPherson, Kansas. The new system will provide improved lead times and quicker customer response for customers worldwide.

The addition of a new Weingartner screw-cutting machine at Wear Technology has significantly increased screw-manufacturing capacity. “We use the new machine primarily as a milling machine, with its focus on twin screw manufacturing, but we also have whirling capability”, said David Thiessen, Engineering Manager at Wear Technology. “This new machining capacity has increased our length capability, allowing the manufacture of screws in excess of 8 meters in length. This addition has allowed us to become even more ‘aligned’ with extruder screw and barrel manufacturing operations at the Cincinnati Milacron Mt. Orab, OH and Mississauga, Ontario (Progress Precision) barrel and screw manufacturing plants. It also expands our product line capabilities outside of the plastics industry in areas such as pump rotors and screw pumps,” stated David Thiessen.

Milacron was one of the first manufacturers to utilize the high-speed screw cutting technology in North America for extrusion feed screws, as well as feed screws used for injection and blow molding applications. The technology enables enhanced machining precision and part accuracy while providing enhanced custom designs and increasing total output. “We placed the machine into production and immediately produced a positive impact on our delivery and customer response capability from both operations in Ohio and Kansas,” stated Ross Anderson, President of North American Plastics Machinery Group. The decision to add the capacity in Kansas was made in late 2007 as Cincinnati Milacron and Wear Technology’s aftermarket barrel and screw retrofit packages continued to grow to the point where existing capacity utilization was being pushed well above 95%.

The logistics between Milacron’s three screw and barrel operations and the strong commitment to meet customer requirements enabled the decision for additional machinery capability. “Our overall aftermarket business is growing for extrusion, injection and blow molding feed screws and Milacron is supplying this technology for machines on a global basis”, stated Ross Anderson.

The Cincinnati Milacron Extrusion Systems operation called Wear Technology is located in McPherson, Kansas. Wear Technology, in conjunction with the operations in Ohio and Ontario, is one the industries largest feed screw rebuilders and original equipment manufacturers of parallel and conical twin screws in North America. The operation supplies new screws & barrels and rebuilds screws for all makes and models of competitive twin and single screw extruders. The company’s wear protection screw coating technologies based on tungsten carbide and molybdenum coatings has made Wear Technology the industry front runner for providing extrusion process and wear technology. This capability is a very strong advantage for processors. Equally important is Wear Technology’s ability to custom design and engineer screws to meet customer’s individual process requirements.
