Twin Screw Design and Technology
Cincinnati Milacron Barrels & Screws for Extrusion Systems
Cincinnati Milacron’s Twin Screw focus is on providing high surface area / low shear screw designs that will optimize the homogeneity of the melt, maximize the productivity of the extruder, and provide long lasting life for both the screw(s) and barrel.
Replace or Upgrade for Performance
Continuous improvement and processing developments enhance production performance over the life of your extruder. Processes, raw materials and formulations change. Let us review your process with you. In many cases, we can improve melt quality, throughput rate, and wear life when compared with the technology originally supplied with your extruder. Either way, we will keep you productive.
he coating technology used on Cincinnati Milacron screws is also available from our Wear Technology subsidiary.
Single Screw Design and Technology
Cincinnati Milacron Barrels & Screws for Extrusion Systems
Cincinnati Milacron’s Single Screw focus is on carefully choosing the design (Barrier, Maddock, Spiral) and material of construction (4140, 4340, CPM9V, CPM420V and others) to match a very broad range of applications.

Highest Quality Wear Protection
Cincinnati Milacron Barrels & Screws for Extrusion Systems
Cincinnati Milacron knows that wear is minimized by using the optimal screw geometry in combination with the correct choice of materials of construction for both the barrel and screw(s). For advanced wear protection, alternative materials of construction are available to reduce the cost of and extend the overall life cycle of both the barrel & screw set. For example, we have the following optional material of construction combinations available for our Twin Screw Extruders:
| Degree of Abrasiveness |
Low |
Moderate |
High |
Screws |
Carburized |
Molybdenum Coated |
Tungsten In-Lay |
Barrels |
Nitrided |
Nitrided |
Tungsten Clad or Lined |
- Our molybdenum PLASMA FLAME SPRAYED AND HVOF (high velocity oxygen fuel) types of plasma flight coatings are field proven to be of the highest quality and wear resistance. Our "Moly" coating is hard, dense, tough, and smooth. It also has self-lubricating characteristics and makes a hard-bearing surface that extends wear life.
- Our proprietary tungsten carbide, cobalt and nickel-based coatings for flight overlay are applied using the PTA (PLASMA TRANSFER ARC) Welding System. The coating procedures ensure consistency in coating deposition. They produce coatings that are very strong, hard and ductile with uniform particle dispersion. These coatings offer extreme abrasion resistance and extend wear life.
Wear Technology has developed proprietary processes and new innovation in jigging procedures to give you top quality INDUSTRIAL HARD CHROME PLATING on your screws. For greater protection against corrosion and depending on the application, all twin screw designs are available with options for standard length chrome (metering and vent zone); extended length chrome (standard length plus compression and part of the pre-compression zone); and full length chrome. Single screws are chromed as required depending on the application.
Tungsten Clad Conical Barrels
Cincinnati Milacron Barrels & Screws for Extrusion Systems
For high wear applications, Conical Twin Screw Barrels are supplied with tungsten cladding on the ID of the barrel. Cincinnati Milacron is the only supplier in the World capable of supplying tungsten clad conical barrels. Parallel Twin Screw Barrels and Single Screw Extruders are provided with either nitrided barrels or with a replaceable bimetallic liner. Once the original liner is worn, it can be replaced with a new liner, thus extending the life of the extruder barrel and minimizing your replacement cost.
Ready Availability and Fast Delivery
Cincinnati Milacron Barrels & Screws for Extrusion Systems
To provide speed to market and the tightest control over quality, Cincinnati Milacron has Barrel & Screw manufacturing facilities in Ohio and Kansas (United States), and Ontario (Canada). Extensive quality control procedures follow each barrel and screw set from order date through delivery. And, many screws and barrels are stock items available for delivery right off the shelf. Cincinnati Milacron stocks the heater bands for all of our extruder product lines, so you can order your replacement barrel with or with out them. Your choice!
