Milacron And Composite Products Inc. Deliver Cost Effective & Technologically Advanced Long Fiber Molding Capability

Milacron Provides Complete System Integration for CPI’s Patented Leading Edge Composite Processing

BATAVIA, OHIO, June 11, 2009 – Milacron announced today that they have joined with Composite Products Inc. (CPI) of Winona, MN to provide complete systems for CPI’s patented and industry leading D-LFT long fiber processing technology. CPI’s designs, utilizing their Advantage® Process, won first place awards in SPI’s most innovative commercial product entry in both 2006 and 2007. The John Deere tractor cab roof frame design took top honors in the agricultural category, and the GM front end grille guard design took top honors in the automotive category.

Through the technology agreement with CPI, Milacron provides the single process equipment technology source for complete direct in-line compounding and molding of long fiber thermoplastic composite materials. Milacron is uniquely positioned to completely engineer and supply the compounding and molding technologies, as well as machinery, peripherals, controls, and the material handling equipment required for complete system integration. Immediate benefits to customers include:

  • A common control platform – Cincinnati Milacron Mosaic – for set-up, operation, processing feedback and diagnostics;
  • Ability to mold D-LFT long fiber Class “A” surface finish – structural and non-structural parts with colors;
  • Outperforms conventional injection, LFT, and DLFT platforms;
  • Facilities layout;
  • Lower maintenance costs;
  • Lower overall system and operating costs;
  • Improved productivity;
  • Reduced system installation costs;
  • Lower carbon footprint – “Earth Friendly Technologies.”

Milacron’s broad extruder product line provides the exceptional ability to custom design the equipment to meet the exacting needs of the CPI D-LFT process. Proprietary feed screws for multiple materials and fibers, longer L/D processing units, materials of construction for advanced wear solutions, robust and reliable drive trains, and complete process engineering capabilities are just a few of the advantages Milacron brings to the compounding process. The CPI Advantage® process allows for each application to be formulated with a base resin and additives to maximize performance while reducing costs. The formulation can be varied to promote flow, ductility, flame resistance, high and low temperature performance, colors, UV resistance, and recycled materials. Milacron’s systems engineering capability efficiently ties every detail together including multiple additive feed streams to the tandem compounding system, including accurate proportional feeding of long fiber content, resulting in precise fiber uniformity, distribution, and delivery to the mold at the required melt temperature. The aforementioned Mosaic Control provides process control and feedback throughout the process.

Systems integration experts and CPI representatives will be on site at the NPE 2009 show in Chicago June 22 through June 25, 2009. CPI will also be participating in technical presentations at the Milacron booth South Hall #24012.
