Turnkey Automated Vertical Machine System Efficiently Produces Solar Panels

BATAVIA, OHIO, June 3, 2009 – Milacron announced today that they have joined with technology partner QSI Automation, Inc. of Churubusco, IN, to provide an “Earth Friendly Technology” automated vertical machine system to produce solar water heating systems for The LeverEdge Company of Odessa, FL, a major distributor of pool heating systems.

The automated Cincinnati Milacron Magna 280 vertical injection molding machine system will produce solar collector panels used to heat swimming pools for commercial and residential pool owners. The earth friendly solar heaters allow an extended swimming season as well as a comfortable water temperature.

The Cincinnati Milacron Magna 280 stationary vertical injection machine is engineered and manufactured in Batavia, Ohio. The injection machine is part of a turnkey system designed by QSI Automation that includes the design and manufacture of molds, automation, integration and installation as well as project management. “The Cincinnati Milacron Magna 280 ton vertical press features a robust C-frame clamp design that allows for ease of automation. The machine also features the new Mosaic control; Milacron’s state of the art windows based control platform” states Brian Bish of Milacron. Efficient synchronized servo-driven transfer heads automatically index conveyors to shuttle extrusions in and out of the machine mold area.

The automated machine system provides numerous improvements over previous methods:

  • Double the production capacity with fewer operators required.
  • Improved energy efficiency with servo driven equipment
  • Mold design optimized for improved repeatability and reduced scrap
  • Minimized potential for miss loading of inserts, resulting in mold damage
  • Same mold base can run all styles and configurations with minimal change over time.
  • Systems open design can readily accept future improvements such as down stream inspection.

QSI Automation, Inc. specializes in turn key systems for the plastics and other industries. Areas of expertise include automation, mold design and manufacture, feeder systems, and molding machine services under one roof. QSI has completed many manufacturing systems with Milacron over the years.

Vertical injection molding machine experts and QSI representatives will be on site at the NPE 2009 show in Chicago June 22 through June 25, 2009. QSI will also be participating in technical presentations at the Milacron booth South Hall #24012.
