Milacron Celebrates Landmark 50th Anniversary in Plastics
Milacron Holdings Corp. (NYSE: MCRN), a leading industrial technology company serving the plastics processing industry celebrates a landmark milestone this Fall with its 50th Anniversary in Plastics. In 1968 Milacron made the foray into the manufacture of injection molding machines and since then has made history producing some of the plastic industry’s most advanced and reliable machines.
Milacron CEO Tom Goeke stated “What an amazing achievement! Milacron has a storied past with its birth in 1884 as Cincinnati Screw and Tap Company, then The Cincinnati Milling Company and its present-day form Milacron; a leading force in Plastics.” Goeke added, “Like any company of Milacron’s vintage we’ve seen a great number of gains, some incredible technological advancements and have played a significant role in the globalization of the plastics industry. Milacron is now more successful than ever and uniquely positioned to continue on the path of innovation and excellence that has been set forth by the generations of past Milacron associates, and we’re committed to providing our customers industry-leading products alongside unmatched service and support. The next 50 years for Milacron look very bright indeed.”
Milacron entered the plastics industry in the Fall of 1968 with its first lineup of injection molding machinery. With a newly formed division of The Cincinnati Milling Company, Milacron Plastics Machinery was poised to build off of the previous 84 years of innovation, technology, and precision that drove the Cincinnati, OH company to the forefront of industrial manufacturing. Milacron called upon its internal expertise to design and develop a prototype injection molding machine from scratch. The first line-up of injection molding machines were exhibited at the National Plastics Exposition (NPE) in Chicago in 1968. Full production of that initial line-up started that same year in the Milacron – Oakley, OH facility.
The growing plastics industry and an ever-increasing acceptance and application of plastics allowed Milacron to scale up support for the booming industry. Just two years after entering the plastics industry, Milacron constructed its first plastics machinery manufacturing facility in Afton, OH in 1970 with over 75,250 square feet, and then doubling the footprint in 1972. Today, the Afton facility is one of many Milacron locations that manufacture and service machinery for the plastics industry and stands at 527,277 square feet in size.
While Milacron had been pushing ahead in the injection molding machinery industry, they had also been exploring other plastics processing methods. In 1969, Milacron advanced into the extrusion business when it purchased two Austrian companies that specialized in twin-screw technology for PVC and other construction applications. Three years following the acquisitions, Milacron began making extruders out of its Clermont County facility in addition to its Austrian plants.
By 1971, only three years after entering the plastics processing machinery business, Milacron had also investigated the blow molding form of plastics processing. After a joint research initiative with DuPont, Milacron created and perfected a blow molding machine to capitalize on the polyester resin or PET technology that DuPont had created a few years prior. Built off of the unique and attractive food-grade container attributes of the PET technology, the US domestic market and the many PET applications soon saw rapid growth and change from the new technology spur from Milacron.
Milacron’s contributions to the progression of the global plastic industry have been numerous and varied; from the development of and patents granted around nozzle shut off devices, computer-based process controls, mold change systems, and servo–hydraulic drive systems to co-injection machines for engineered resins.
Milacron’s integral part in advancing the technology and machinery of the injection molding industry is further illustrated by the long-running collaboration and partnership with the 1972 spin-off company from Fujitsu; known today as FANUC. By 1983, Milacron-FANUC began a strategic alliance to develop a CNC-controlled all-electric injection molding machine that would further change the landscape of the injection molding industry. Known today as the Roboshot, its predecessors were born from Milacron’s willingness to help promote and progress the science and technology in the plastics industry. In 2018, Milacron also celebrated its 35-year anniversary of distribution of the Roboshot machine line in the Americas.
Milacron continued to add to its portfolio and breadth of offerings over the following decades. The acquisitions of historic and industry-leading brands like Mold-Masters, Ferromatik, DME, Uniloy, and Kortec as well as the growth of its Aftermarket offerings including parts, technical service, and support have allowed Milacron to continuously grow to expand its product offering and offer the widest range of technical solutions in the entire plastics industry.
Today, Milacron stands ready to innovate and support our customers for the next 50 years with ever advancing technologies, service and more efficient and experienced ways to help than ever before.
Milacron will officially celebrate its 50th year in plastics in the Fall of 2018 within the Milacron family of associates and personnel and will be celebrating its next 50 years with customers in 2019 with a variety of activities and engagements.
