- Check fluid concentrations to make sure that it is within recommended ranges of supplier
- Check fluid for contamination to minimize tramp oil. Keep tramp oil to 3% or less, unless a different guideline is recommended by your supplier. (Special air handling systems may be required to reduce oily mists if tramp oils are not controlled)
- Check fluid pH to be within guidelines. Adjust to within ranges as recommended by supplier.
- Check fluid for biological odors. If fluid is rancid, contact Supplier for recommendations
- Check fluid for circulating dirt or debris. If fluid is “dirty”, check filtration
- Check fluid to insure that the metalworking fluid has not “split”. Allow the fluid to remain static for a few hours in clear jar and observe.
- Check fluid for ion components. Typically, these tests must be done at your Supplier’s lab
- Check tooling for correct hardness, metallurgy and coating
- Check tooling source to see if recent change in supplier source or tooling material.
- Check for proper tool geometry
- Check tooling to see if built-up edge or edge break-down is occurring. Contact your tool supplier and let them know what is occurring.
- Check chip geometry. Large chips may indicate too much lubricity; Small chips may indicate lack of lubricity.
- Check speeds and feeds of machinery setup
- Check for recent changes in metal source, tooling supply or metalworking fluid
- Check for recent changes in fluids (recent large water additions)
- Check for correct use of lubricating oils, way oils, hydraulic oils
- Check for leaks and correct
- Check for recent changes in filter media or supplier
- Check to insure that no mop waste, process waste oils or other materials were added to sump.
