GRINDING WHEEL LIFE/FINISH
- Check fluid concentrations to make sure within recommended ranges of supplier
- Check fluid for contamination to minimize tramp oil. Keep tramp oil to 3% or less unless recommended by supplier
- Check fluid pH to be within guidelines Adjust to within ranges as recommended by supplier.
- Check fluid for biological odors. If fluid is rancid, contact Supplier for recommendations
- Check fluid for circulating dirt or debris. If fluid is “dirty”, check filtration.
- Check fluid to insure that the metalworking fluid has not “split”. Leave fluid for a few hours in clear jar and observe
- Check fluid for ion components. Typically, these tests must be done at your Supplier’s lab
GRINDING WHEEL (TOOLING) CONSIDERATIONS:
- Make sure wheel is properly graded for operation. Hard wheels may cause burn; soft wheels cause sizing issues.
- Make sure wheel is properly manufactured and is “true” and balanced. Contact supplier to verify.
- Check for wheel loading where chips are sticking to the wheel. Dress wheel if needed.
- Make sure wheel is properly dressed and diamond is in good shape.
- Check dressing tool for alignment and accurate depth of cut.
- Make sure wheel is not chipped or broken.
- Make sure nozzles are properly directed at work zone and that there is sufficient fluid flow.
- Check workpiece for changes in hardness or size.
- Check grinder for stability.
- Check that grinding cycles and depth of cut are properly set and consistent.
- If doing centerless grinding, make sure the workpiece height is properly set to avoid chatter and out of round parts.
