Polypropylene Preforms for Foods

There is increasing interest in using multi-layer PP containers worldwide in commercial applications as an alternative to glass for products such as:

  • pasta sauces
  • fruits
  • baby foods
  • soups
  • vegetables
  • condiments
  • dry foods/powders

The target markets for these types of containers are glass packages where filling temperatures exclude the use of PET (above 95°C, and up to 121°C for retort packages).  Milacron Co-injection provides production systems from 4-cavities to 144-cavities depending on the output requirements of each application, and the company does not charge royalties to brand owners and converters who purchase their systems.  Typical package sizes include:

  • 63-70mm finish for sauces, fruits and vegetables, and soups
  • 33mm finish for juices
  • 51mm finish for baby foods

Gamma-Clear technology, which is owned by Amcor (USA) and licensed worldwide by Milacron Co-injection (outside of North America), features the use of polypropylene and EVOH with a ‘compatibilizer’ to strengthen the container’s properties and prevent de-lamination.

In addition to the numerous benefits that this technology provides, including glass-like clarity, lightweight and unbreakable packages and long shelf life, Gamma-Clear is also recognized for its sustainable attributes.  Brand owners and retailers have already identified plastic containers as superior to glass for their lower carbon footprint.  Reasons for this include the fact that it takes less energy to produce the plastic container than glass, plus the resulting lightweight package is much easier and cheaper to transport – an even more significant issue with today’s rising oil costs.
